Photo Essay

Flower market is one of the Hong Kong traditions. It was hold before the Chinese New Year. Many people go to the flower market to buy necessities for celebrating the new year, or go there for entertainment and leisure. In 2019, the Yuen Long Flower Market opens from 30th, January to 5th, February. It was held in Yuen Long Tung Tau Industrial Area Playground. There are a total of 174 booths, including 74 dry goods, 98 wet goods and 2 fast food stalls.

The Yuen Long

The helium balloons is one of the spotlights of the flower market. They are sold HKD$60.

In the wet goods stalls district, most of the stalls are selling flowers.

Orchid is one of the common fower species sold in the flower market.

Some kinds of flowers, like Gladiolus, are packed for sale. A stall assistant is wrapping the flowers.

The prices of these succulent plants vary from HKD$218 to HKD$68.

Nipple Fruit is interpreted as 'Five generation living together', which is a blessing of family peace and completeness.

Bamboos sold in wet stalls are pruned as different shape of towers, which carry meanings of good wealth.

Citrus plants have a metaphorical meaning of good fortune in Chinese.

In the dry goods stalls district, toys and groceries are sold.

'Sister Chun', one of the popular stalls in Yuen Long Flower Market, sells Hong Kong traditional food, like rice dumplings.

Woo Wing Sum,22, purchases a Bingtanhulu( candied haws on a stick) form a snack stall. " It tastes good, but is too viscous." She comments.
